The story behind the Book Date Patchwork Quilt

This one came about a little unexpectedly. I had shared the Book Date as a simple one-page layout only freebie to my newsletter subscribers a while back, but I kept coming back to it and thinking it deserved more. So I updated the pattern into a full 5-page version with more detailed instructions and added cutting info for single-fabric books alongside the patchwork option. I love this quilt as a gift because you can personalize the book spines with the recipient's favorite titles, it makes it so meaningful.

About the Pattern

The finished quilt measures 60 inches wide by 72 inches tall. Construction uses all squares and half-square triangles, making it a great beginner project that sews up quickly. The pattern includes a coloring sheet for planning your layout and color scheme before you cut. A fun option is adding embroidered or quilted book titles to the spines, the pattern includes dimensions for each book size so you know how big to keep your lettering.

One Pattern, Endless Options

A few fun ways you can make this pattern your own.

1

Patchwork or single-fabric books

Piece each book spine from scraps for a textured look, or use a single fabric per book for a cleaner, quicker version.

2

Personalized titles

Embroider your favorite book titles onto the spines using 6 strands of DMC embroidery floss. Backstitch or chain stitch both work well. You can also free motion quilt the titles instead.

3

Colorful background

Use the grid of the patchwork background to make a pattern with the squares, checkboard, Ommbre, even stripes! Or just go colorful instead of the more standard all squares in the same colorway as most of the examples.
