The story behind the Echinacea Quilt Block

The Echinacea Quilt Block is one of my most versatile designs. I wanted to create a coneflower block that looked beautiful on its own but could also be repeated into a full quilt without getting boring, and the key to that is all the built-in customization. The cone, the petals, the leaf placement, the background, every element can be changed from block to block, so even a quilt with 20 identical blocks feels varied and alive.

About the Pattern

The finished block measures 12 inches by 18 inches and is traditionally pieced using half-square triangles and scant 1/4-inch seams. The pattern includes printable petal templates, a full cut list, fabric amounts, and detailed sewing instructions with multiple diagrams showing every customization option. Make one block for a mini quilt or wall hanging, a few for a table runner, or go all out with 20 blocks for a 60x72 inch throw quilt. If you want additional sizes or FPP templates, check out the Echinacea Field Expansion Pack.

One Pattern, Endless Options

A few fun ways you can make this pattern your own.

1

Cone/bud options

Make a solid cone piece for simplicity, or cut pieces N and O for a two-fabric ombre effect on the cone.

2

Leaf placement

Even leaves on both sides for a symmetrical look, or offset with one side higher for a more natural, organic feel. The pattern diagrams show exactly which pieces go where for each option.

3

Scrappy or solid background

Use one background fabric for a clean look or go scrappy for more texture. Both approaches work beautifully.

4

Petal combos

Matching petals for a coordinated coneflower, or scrappy combinations for variety. Every block can be completely unique.
