The story behind the Moth Eclipse FPP

I designed this pattern because I wanted something that would really showcase fabric choices in a dramatic way, and moths turned out to be the perfect subject. There are just so many options, changing up the fabric placement, how many fabrics you use, going with prints or solids. I highly recommend searching for images of real moths online for color inspiration. It's amazing how many gorgeous, brightly colored moths exist in nature. Fair warning: browsing moth photos and planning colorways is addicting.

About the Pattern

The Moth Eclipse pattern includes three different Foundation Paper Pieced moth blocks, each finishing at 12" x 8". Each moth has a similar construction with 8-10 sections to sew and assemble, but they all have their own unique features. The pattern comes with 4 PDF files, one with instructions and diagrams, and three separate template files (one per moth, 2 pages each). Fabric amounts, detailed sewing instructions, and multiple diagrams walk you through the process. Skill level is intermediate to advanced, and FPP experience is recommended.

One Pattern, Endless Options

A few fun ways you can make this pattern your own.

1

Three unique moths

Each moth has its own features. Moth 1 has larger sections to highlight fabric, Moth 2 has spots, and Moth 3 has striped wings with spots on the lower wings and a different overall shape.

2

Simplified wings

Each moth has spots or stripes you can easily omit by using a single fabric in those sections. Fewer fabrics, fewer pieces, still gorgeous.

Real moth inspiration

What Makers Are Saying

★★★★★

Just finished making one block to use as a mini quilt - I love it so much! I did a simpler FPP pattern as a warm-up first (I'd only done economy blocks before this) and that made the process of creating my moth much nicer. It's a delightful pattern.
