The story behind the StarBeam Quilt

I designed the StarBeam quilt for a swap gift for my Quilt'N'Sisters retreat, a retreat I do with four friends twice a year. I was so excited to turn this into a pattern, but I had to do it all in secret so I wouldn't spoil the surprise. The whole thing came together quickly and it was such a fun design process.

About the Pattern

The 14-page pattern includes two sizes: a throw at 60" x 70" and a baby size at 30" x 40". You could also easily increase or decrease the size with the column piecing method. The pattern walks you through two methods for piecing the strips, strip piecing for speed, or squares for more control over fabric placement. There are also two methods for assembling the blocks: one that's a little more manageable for layout, and one that lets you customize the star placement up or down the column.

StarBeam is fat quarter friendly and jelly roll friendly, and the sawtooth star centers are perfect for fussy-cut prints. Skill level is advanced beginner, knowledge of HSTs, flying geese, and scant 1/4" seams is helpful.

One Pattern, Endless Options

A few fun ways you can make this pattern your own.

1

Strip piecing

The faster method is great if you love chain piecing and want to fly through blocks. Perfect for scrappy quilts where you want variety without overthinking placement.

2

Square piecing

More control over fabric placement for a curated, intentional look. Choose this method if you want to be deliberate about which fabrics go where.

3

Ombre background

Arrange your background fabrics from light to dark for a gradient effect. There's a dedicated page at the end of the pattern showing how to set this up.

4

Fussy cut star centers

The sawtooth star centers are the perfect size for showcasing a fussy-cut print. One of my testers did a fussy-cut center and it looked incredible.
